"Ya snooze, ya lose," replied the turtle who was often stealing food from the slower animals. "Hey! That was my fly!" cried the frog indignantly. Turtle and Frog were cooling off in the pond-Frog shading himself under the lilypads and Turtle doing backstrokes through the water. Frog had just spotted a rather delicious looking fly when Turtle raced forward and snatched it up before Frog could even stick his tongue out. It was a bright, sunny day in the marsh and all the animals were out enjoying the weather. Coyote: a trickster tale from the American Southwest. Two of the Reading Standards for Ohio's Common Core include the ability to "recount stories, including fables, folktales, and myths from diverse cultures determine the central message, lesson, or moral and explain how it is conveyed through key details in the text" as well as "describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events." In order to create their own story, the student first has to understand how it was because of the coyote's behavior and overall character that that this story occured. The response to this piece of literature would be for the students to write their own short story describing how a certain creature got one of its traits-like how the coyote got its color. Plus the crows tricking the coyote reminded me of Looney Toons, and I couldn't not use this story. This particular story is southwestern in origin, but if a grade class was learning about Native Americans in their Social Studies class, reading a corresponding piece of traditional literature would really cmpliment the lesson. Using an American Indian story has a lot of possibilities. I wanted both my traditional literature pieces to be very American we have a rich collection of folklore too. I think a lot of the time, when people think of traditional literature, they tend to automatically fal back on European or Asian stories. When he wants to fly with the birds, they decide to teach him a lesson, stealing the feathes they gave him and causing him to fall to earth, catching fire on the way.

This piece of traditional literature describes how the coyote got his ashy color and dark tail. Coyote is a very troublesome character, disturbing all the animals.
